Crossover Procedure When Changing Control Strip Batches
Crossover procedure for switching to a new batch of process control strips without misadjusting the processor.
When a roll of control strips (pre-exposed or PCE) is running out, a new roll must replace it. Because the emulsion of the new batch may give different densities, a crossover is essential; otherwise the processor may be adjusted incorrectly and film produced with low or high density.
Highlights
- Using the current control strips, confirm that the processor is in control and meets current aims, and correct it if necessary
- Splice three strips from the current batch and three strips from the new batch together and process them
- Measure the RD density of the pre-exposed strip or the aim step of the sensitometer exposure for the old and new strips
- Confirm that the old batch is within the allowed range
- Use the new RD or aim step value as the new control aim
- Repeat steps 1 to 4 for each processor
- Record the crossover and new densities on the process control chart or start a new chart for each processor

Frequently asked questions
Why is crossover necessary when replacing a roll of control strips?
Because the emulsion of the new batch may give different densities, otherwise the processor may be adjusted incorrectly and produce film with low or high density.
How many control strips from the current and new batches are used for crossover?
Three strips from the current batch and three strips from the new batch are spliced together and processed.
What must be checked before setting a new control aim during crossover?
Using the current control strips, the processor must be confirmed to be in control and meet current aims, and corrected if necessary.
What values are measured to set the new control aim during crossover?
The RD density of the pre-exposed strip or the aim step of the sensitometer exposure for the old and new strips is measured, and the new RD or aim step value is used as the new control aim.
What must be recorded on the process control chart after crossover?
The crossover and new densities must be recorded on the process control chart or a new chart must be started for each processor.
