Tools and Procedures for Cleaning Imaging Equipment Optics

Clean imaging equipment optics with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water; tools and supplies for capture devices and duplicators.

A clean environment is the key to quality images, whether capture is photographic or electronic. The glass and mirrors in most exposure devices are expensive optics, and dust on them is recorded on the image and also reduces light transmission or reflection, making the image lighter.

Highlights

  • Clean optics only with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water
  • Water is inexpensive, always available, clean and naturally anti-static
  • Glass cleaners and alcohol wipes leave an invisible chemical film that reduces image quality
  • An alcohol product can be used for stubborn dirt, but the surface should then be cleaned again with water
  • This rule applies to capture devices, duplicators and reader printers
