Scratch Test Procedures for Processors, Cameras and Duplicators
Step-by-step scratch test procedures to find and fix the source of film scratches in processors, cameras and duplicators.
A Scratch Test should be run monthly or after any service on all processors, cameras and duplicators to identify and eliminate the source of film scratches.
Highlights
- Use fresh, unused raw film (HQ, FS and UC)
- Inspect the film on a rewind station with reflected light, without letting the film touch rollers or the table surface
- Fish hook scratches at the film edge usually indicate film catching between transport rollers
- If scratches are found, fix the problem and repeat the test
Processors (table-top and deep tank)
- Use a fresh roll of raw film
- Make sure all rollers and surfaces are clean and turn freely
- Make sure squeegees are present and in good condition
- Replace all Dev, Fix and water filters before the test
- Load the film without a safelight
- Process the film with the lid open or white light on (silver halide film only)
- Inspect the film; scratches caused by the processor appear as minus density
Cameras (rotary, planetary and others)
- Use a fresh roll of raw film and clean the film unit
- Load the film and advance it several times under normal conditions
- Remove the take-up section without fogging the film
- Process in a scratch-free processor in total darkness
- Inspect the film; scratches caused by the camera film unit appear as plus density
Duplicators (Silver, Diazo, Vesicular)
- Use fresh raw duplicating film and a suitable master film, and clean the duplicator
- Load both films and print at least 20 feet
- Remove the take-up section without fogging (silver halide only)
- Process in a scratch-free processor
- Inspect the film; scratches caused by the duplicator appear with the opposite polarity of the film base

Frequently asked questions
How should a scratch test be performed on a processor?
Use a fresh roll of raw film, make sure all rollers, surfaces and squeegees are clean and turn freely, replace all Dev, Fix and water filters before the test, load the film without a safelight, and process silver halide film with the lid open or white light on.
How do scratches caused by a camera appear in a scratch test?
Scratches caused by the camera film unit appear as plus density.
How much film should be printed when running a scratch test on a duplicator?
At least 20 feet of film should be printed.
What do fish hook scratches at the film edge indicate?
Fish hook scratches at the film edge usually indicate film catching between transport rollers.
How do duplicator scratches appear relative to the film base?
Scratches caused by the duplicator appear with the opposite polarity of the film base.
