Computing Processor Dwell Time and Transport Speed
A simple formula converts the film manufacturer's developer dwell time into processor transport speed, with an Allen M70 example.
Film manufacturers specify how long film should stay in the developer (dwell time). A simple formula converts this value into processor transport speed.
Highlights
- Formula: (developer rack(s) path length ÷ dwell time in seconds) × 60 = processor transport speed
- Example for the Allen Processor M70: (154 Feet ÷ 58 Seconds) × 60 = 159 ft/min

Frequently asked questions
How is processor transport speed calculated from dwell time?
Use (developer rack(s) path length ÷ dwell time in seconds) × 60 = processor transport speed. Film manufacturers specify how long film should stay in the developer.
What is dwell time?
Dwell time is how long film should stay in the developer, and film manufacturers specify it.
