IMAGELINK Brown Toner for Extending Microfilm Life

Model
IMAGELINK Brown Toner

IMAGELINK Brown Toner converts microfilm image silver to silver sulfide to prevent redox blemishes in new and existing silver-gelatin film.

Key features

  • Converts image silver to silver sulfide with high resistance to moisture and oxidants
  • No loss of microfilm image quality; image areas may appear blacker or more neutral
  • No effect on D-min or clear areas when properly washed
  • Can be used in-line (with normal processing) or off-line in deep tank processors
  • Can be used in table-top processors such as the IMAGELINK Archive Processor (Prostar)
  • Used together with molecular sieves, it significantly extends film life even under adverse conditions
  • Effectiveness evaluated per ISO 18915; an image with retained density of 65% or more is considered stable

Description

Some silver-gelatin microfilms develop microscopic red or yellow spots (redox blemishes) after 2 to 20 years of storage. These spots result from localized oxidation of the image silver by atmospheric oxygen, moisture and pollutants such as hydrogen peroxide, ozone, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, and once formed they cannot be reversed.

IMAGELINK Brown Toner is a chemical treatment that converts the developed silver in the film to silver sulfide, which is far more resistant to moisture and oxidants. Based on tests by Kodak and the Image Permanence Institute (IPI), it prevents the spread of redox blemishes in roll film and is effective for both freshly processed film and existing collections.
